Teen shot at east Athens trailer park

By Joe Johnson

A teenager reportedly was shot Sunday morning at a trailer park on the east side of Athens.

According to police, officers responded at about 11:15 a.m. to Hallmark Estates on Spring Valley Road to investigate reports of gunshots being fired.

Upon arrival the officers located Carlos A. Harper Jr. 16, with a bullet wound to his arm.

Harper said that he had been walking near the complex’s mailboxes and office building when unknown males shot him, according to police.

EMS transported him to a local hospital with a non-life-threatening wound.

The victim, who lives at Hallmark Estates, told police he did not know who would have shot him.

A maintenance worker found a bullet on the road in front of the trailer park office and another was located near the mailboxes, police said.

A review of surveillance camera video found that a white Honda Civic bearing Georgia tag CSD9724 left the complex at the time of the shooting.

The incident is under investigation, and the Athens-Clarke County Police Department asked for anyone with information to contact Sgt. Scott Black at scott.black@accgov.com or 762-400-7058.

So many thoughts right now. Why him, why then, who and why again. Odds are the miscreants that did this did not walk into the Clyde Armory and purchase a handgun. No, it was borrowed or stolen. It seems unfair, but I'd like to see a $10,000 penalty for anyone who has a gun stolen. Yes, that's punishing the victim, but the victim needs to keep their firearm safe!

You can dream and imagine all you want about how they got the guns but the fact is they got them and used them. If they stole them, they should be the ones paying the $10,000 along with a nice long prison sentence.

Hopefully some witnesses will come forward.
