Firefighters early Thursday responded to an alarm at an unoccupied apartment complex under construction east of downtown Athens and made fast work of bringing the situation under control.
Responding to the 6:37 a.m. alarm at 199 Stone Mill Run, fire crews were met by smoke along the building’s roofline, at which point the response was upgraded to a multi-family structure fire and additional units were dispatched.
Quickly, crews went to work: forcing entry into the building, advancing hoseline, searching for potential victims, and making a decisive attack on the fire.
The fire was confined to a utility closet that also stored some plywood and a mattress, and the damage was confined to that room's wall, ceiling, and contents.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
