With temperatures expected to dip into the 20s this weekend, residents can register to receive warming site updates by texting ACCSHELTER to 888777.
According to the county government, users can register as many times as needed and will receive notifications regarding pop up warming sites or additional emergency shelters.
A dashboard that provides occupancy data for the local shelters is also available at accgov.com/shelter.
Athens-Clarke County has introduced an updated Emergency Shelter Plan to enhance community safety during extreme weather events and other emergencies. Historically, ACC relied on the American Red Cross to manage shelter operations but representatives from ACC found ARC to be insufficient in providing preventative warming or cooling shelters during the extreme weather events of 2022, leading them to the necessity of community-driven solutions.
The revised plan emphasizes the vital role of community partners, as ACC staff alone cannot manage shelter operations. The revised plan outlines a framework that prioritizes inclusivity and community partnership, ensuring access for individuals without transportation, families with pets, and those with other unique needs with.
The philosophy guiding the revised plan is as follows:
Locations must be places of comfort and safety.
Locations must be readily accessible to individuals affected.
All workers must be strong advocates for shelter guests.
Shelter guests must remain proactive participants in recovery.
Emergency Shelter Facilities must provide a safe and secure environment that accommodates the
broadest range of needs.
Partnerships with local organizations, civic groups and agencies will ensure the availability of resources, volunteers, and suitable facilities. Potential shelter locations include schools, community centers, and places of worship.
Residents and organizations interested in supporting ACC's emergency shelter efforts or learning more can visit Athens-Clarke County Emergency Management for additional information.
