Athens man charged with murder for allegedly running down girlfriend with SUV at bus stop

An Athens woman was killed Sunday when struck by an SUV being driven by her boyfriend while she waited at a bus stop.

Police said that Jeffery Scott Tate intentionally struck 45-year-old Shelby Cox and they arrested him for murder.

According to the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, officers responded at about 6:13 p.m. to the 2000 block of Atlanta Highway where Cox had been struck by a Toyota Highlander while she waited at a bus stop. The SUV then left the scene.

Responding officers and emergency personnel started life-saving efforts on Cox, who succumbed to her injuries at the hospital.

Tate, 58, was later located in Watkinsville, where he was arrested with the assistance of the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office.

He was charged with murder, felony hit and run, reckless driving, and failure to maintain lane of travel.
