An Athens man was arrested last week on charges that he sexually assaulted a juvenile family member over a period several years.
Korrin De’Andre Stevens, 23, was taken into custody after he brought attention to himself by suggesting that he wanted to commit suicide.
Police on Thursday responded to a Vincent Drive residence after Stevens called 911 “requesting law enforcement to provide him with the means to kill himself,” according to an Athens police report.
The day before police had gone to Stevens’ home to take a report from his parents that their son had committed sexual battery against a juvenile family member. The matter was referred to the Madison County Sheriff’s Office because the alleged crime had occurred in their jurisdiction. Arrest warrants were later obtained.
On arrival of officers to his home Thursday morning, Stevens ran into nearby woods and when officers found him they spent about an hour trying to reason with him.
When Stevens tried to run away he was tackled and had to be carried to a police car for transport to the county line.
After Madison deputies took custody of him, Stevens was booked into the Madison County Jail on charges of child molestation, sexual battery, and battery against a child.
Detectives continue to investigate, with additional charges possible.
