Athens man charged with attempted murder for knife attack on victim’s face

By Joe Johnson

A Clarke County grand jury recently indicted a 30- year-old Athens man for allegedly trying to kill another man by stabbing him multiple times in the face.

Anferknee A. Hanson was charged with aggravated assault and aggravated battery for the attack last year on 39-year-old Aaron Bell, according to the indictment filed Sept. 13 in Superior Court.

Hanson “did make an assault upon the person of Aaron Bell with intent to murder by stabbing him multiple times in the face and eye area,” the indictment alleges.

According to police records, the incident occurred on Oct. 19, 2023 at a Carrol Avenue residence. It was reported by the victim’s wife, who told police that Hanson was her brother.

“Initial investigation indicated that an argument took place between Aaron Bell and Hanson,” said police spokesman Geof Gilland. “At some point during the argument, Hanson stabbed Aaron Bell with a sharp bladed knife or scissors.”

Hanson is currently free on bail and is scheduled to be arraigned on October 16.
