Athens Regional Library System executive director set to retire

Athens Regional Library System Executive Director Valerie Bell has announced that she will be retiring at the end of this year.

Bell has served as director for 10 years, spearheading many initiatives dedicated to fostering community well-being across the Greater Athens Area.

Under her leadership the ARLS experienced a rebranding initiative, guided by her vision of “Engaging Community and Exceeding Expectations.” This vision has garnered grants to fund innovative programs, including the groundbreaking Trauma Informed Library Transformation (TILT) partnership with the University of Georgia School of Social Work and the installation of assistive listening devices for hearing-impaired patrons. Through strategic partnerships, Bell has enhanced access and inclusivity, from greater access of library cards and services to K-12 students, to supporting adult literacy initiatives.

“I have loved serving the Greater Athens Community these last ten years,” said Bell. “I am very proud of what our region has achieved together, and I am confident that the library system and its dedicated staff will continue to evolve to meet the needs of our communities.”

With Bell’s retirement approaching, the ARLS Board of Trustees has committed to ensuring a smooth transition, searching for a candidate who embodies the library system’s mission and values.

“We are deeply grateful for Valerie’s leadership and the positive impact she has made on our communities,” said Julie Walker, Vice Chancellor for Archives and Libraries and State Librarian. “Her passion for excellence in library services and her creativity in meeting her communities' needs have set a high standard for public libraries across the state.  I am confident that the trustees of ARLS will conduct a successful search for a strong and capable leader who will be well-equipped to meet the diverse needs of the many communities that make up the library system.”

The Board anticipates that the search process may take several months, allowing for a thorough and thoughtful decision-making process. Further updates on the hiring process will be shared as the Board of Trustees progresses in its efforts to find the ideal candidate to take over the role of ARLS Executive Director in 2025.
