The Clarke County Board of Education last week voted to rename two elementary schools to honor the first Black teachers at each school.
Alps Road Elementary will become Bettye Henderson Holston Elementary, and Chase Street Elementary will become Johnnie Lay Burks Elementary, according to a district news release.
A time to officially rename the schools will be determined at a later date.

Lol you SNOWFLAKES are so BUTTHURT over school names changing! I can't imagine how much crying y'all will do in your safespaces once they take the dick vein out of the Snickers.
The public was not involved and I find this kind of thing insulting to the taxpayers who pay their salary’s. Just another behind closed doors “wokeness“ to keep the races at each others throats. When will they ever learn.... Education has hit a new low.
Fitting tribute to these Women certainly
however I think it could have been accomplished in a more powerful way :
1) name the libraries in each school for them
2) commemorative plaque in lobby
3) $2000 College Scholarship to a student annually in their names open to all based on research in various academic areas of study ..presented at graduation and with press & social media coverage
By the time ACC has to pay for new school signs , map updates, possibly new property titles , new insurance policy designations new www & e mails , business cards, stationery for each teacher, plus any other materials with Alps or Chase on them it will be very expensive
I think the…
Although I appreciate the recognition of these educators, it also makes me very sad that the two schools will be renamed. Chase Street Elementary is over 100 years old and that was recently celebrated. I attended Chase Street and Alps Road Elementary. There were so many who contributed to the education of the students in Clarke County. Will renaming schools to honor them be in the future?
