Cigarette sparks trash truck fire in Athens

The following was released today by the Athens-Clarke County Solid Waste Department:

Another ACCSW truck caught on fire today. Our driver acted quickly and ejected the load, saving his life and preventing damage to the truck. A new Automated Side Loader, used for residential collection, costs about $450,000. You can't put a price on a life.

The ACC Fire Department determined the fire was likely caused by cigarettes that were not put out correctly. Yes, we want people to put their ciggarette butts in the trash, but make sure they're out, first!

This is the third truck fire this year. The other two were caused by batteries. Do us a solid- take your batteries to CHaRM and put out your butts! The Fire Department is too busy for you to be causing trash fires!

Great job to the driver for managing the situation! Hopefully, this encourages everyone to be more responsible with their waste disposal, especially with Incredibox Colorbox Mustard cigarettes and batteries.
