Couple arrested in Athens for drug trafficking with children in car indicted on cruelty charges

A husband and wife from Madison County have been indicted on cruelty charges in connection with their arrest in Athens last year when they with their children in a car while in possession of drugs and a gun.

Mayati Davante Rucker, 32, was charged in the indictment with trafficking cocaine, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and second-degree cruelty to children .

His wife, 28-year-old Heaven Nicole Rucker was indicted for child cruelty and criminal attempt to commit a felony, for aiding her husband in transporting drugs.

The cruelty charges were for subjecting their juvenile son and two daughters to “excessive mental pain by transporting cocaine and a firearm in the car with the children, therefore allowing the children to witness their parents being held at gunpoint, handcuffed, and arrested.

The Ruckers, who live on Pine Avenue in Comer, were arrested last September outside of Sam’s Club on Atlanta Highway as the result of an investigation by the Northeast Georgia Regional Drug Task Force.

According to police, they were with their children in a car in which nine ounces of cocaine and a Sig Sauer 9mm pistol were found.

Current free on bonds, the couple are scheduled to be arraigned on Sept. 4.
