DA Gonzalez on community engagement and judicial reform

The following is a press release from Western Judicial Circuit District Attorney Deborah Gonzalez:

Athens, GA – As the election approaches, District Attorney Deborah Gonzalez is calling on voters to focus on the core values that guide her leadership, emphasizing social justice, community engagement, and equitable access to the legal system. “Our community deserves a District Attorney who stands up for everyone, not just the privileged few who have historically benefited from an entrenched system,” Gonzalez stated.

Gonzalez has demonstrated her commitment to progressive reform, particularly in addressing truancy through community-based solutions. “I will not support arresting non-violent truant youth because it’s unrealistic to think we can catch every student who skips school, and threatening them with legal action isn’t effective if it can’t be enforced. When troubled youth, who need support from their families and communities, become entangled in the legal system, it only worsens the challenges facing historically disenfranchised groups,” she explained.

In contrast, Kalki Yalamanchili has yet to articulate his core values or how his conventional law-and-order approach would meaningfully depart from decades of practices that have often marginalized communities of color and low-income residents. His reluctance to clarify his support for political figures like Trump or Harris raises questions about his commitment to social justice.

“Kalki’s ties to MAGA Republican donors and consultants are concerning,” Gonzalez added. “We cannot afford to revert to a system that prioritizes political connections over the needs of our community. I believe in a DA's office that serves all citizens equitably, particularly those who have been historically marginalized.”

Gonzalez invites community members to share their thoughts and concerns during a public forum on Monday, October 21, at 7 PM at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church at 1931 Old West Broad St, Athens, GA 30606. “This is an opportunity for us to come together, listen to each other, and ensure our collective voices guide the future of our criminal justice system.”

Matthew Pulver, a progressive Democrat and former candidate for the Athens-Clarke County Commission, has officially endorsed Gonzalez. He stated, “Deborah’s moral compass points to the true north of disrupting the American pipeline to prison that our country has devised for Black folks, poor folks, and people facing struggles with addiction and mental illness. This is the most important strength of a DA in 2024, and it’s not even close.”

Pulver emphasized the importance of collaboration., “We must work with schools, the mayor's office, social services, and community organizations to create a supportive network for our youth. Instead of criminalizing their struggles, we need social workers, mental health support, mentorship, and growth opportunities.”

As the election date approaches, Gonzalez continues prioritizing transparency and community collaboration. “I want to hear from you, the community,” she said. “Together, we can build a justice system that reflects our values and supports all individuals, especially those historically disenfranchised.”

Ms. Gonzalez, I would like you to respond to why you continue to violate the crime victims bill of rights act. Five violations in total, one of them just recently filed . A Superior Court Judge had to order you and your whole staff to attend a training on this law, which is an unprecedented act for a judge to have to take. You demonstrate a lack of knowledge about criminal law, as well as an unwillingness to learn since you have been violating victims rights since you took office. Your press release states all the wonderful things your office is doing, but those who work with your office or anyone who looks at the disposition of the majority …
