Athens woman’s unborn child dies after traffic accident

ACCPD Investigating Fatal Crash

On August 20, 2024, at approximately 10:45 AM, the Athens-Clarke County Police Department responded to a vehicle crash in the 1000 Block of Highway 29 southbound. Initial investigation indicates that the driver of a 2018 Kia Optima vehicle rear-ended a dump truck and trailer that was turning into a private driveway.

The driver of the Optima, Abbigale Massey, 25, Athens, GA, was treated by Athens-Clarke Fire and Emergency Services and EMS. Massey, who was 22 weeks pregnant, was transported to a local hospital in serious condition. On August 21, 2024, investigators learned the baby passed away due to injuries sustained in the crash. The mother is still in serious, but stable condition. The dump truck's driver, a 48- year-old male from Winder, was not injured.

This is the sixth fatal crash in Athens-Clarke County in 2024.
