The 14-year-old student who went on a killing spree this week at Apalachee High School in Barrow County made his first court appearance on Friday morning.
Colt Gray preceded in the same courtroom an appearance by his father who also was arrested in connection with the shooting.
The courtroom was packed with relatives and friends of the victims of the shooting, in which four students and teachers were killed and nine others were injured.
Superior Court Judge Currie Mingledorff II first asked Gray is he was able to read and write the English language and if he understood that he has the right to counsel.
The boy quietly said that he did.
The judge then explained the charges and possible sentences, and when he asked whether bail was being sought, defense attorney Zane Harmon said that it was not.
Mingledorff explained to the teen what his rights were, including a preliminary hearing, speedy trial, and to confront and call witnesses.
Soon after the teen was led from the courtroom deputies brought in his father, Colin Gray.
Mingledorff went through the same list of questions, and to that the shooter’s father announced that he did want to have a preliminary hearing in which facts and evidence in the case would be presented.
The judge scheduled the hearing for Dec. 4.
No bond was requested.
Colin Gray faces charges of second-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter, and cruelty to children for having given the murder weapon to his son.
District Attorney Brad Smith announced that a grand jury will convene to review the case next month.
