A Barrow County Superior Court grand jury has indicted 14-year-old Colt Gray and his father Colin Gray for the mass shooting last month at Apalachee High School that killed two students and two teachers and injured nine others.
Colt Gray faces a total of 55 charges that include murder and aggravated assault, as the district attorney called it a case with "the most victims in any criminal case in the county."
Colin Gray, charged with 29 counts, faces allegations of second-degree murder and cruelty to children, among other charges.
The prosecution argues that he ignored concerning signs of his son's behavior and even purchased the firearm used in the incident for Colt as a Christmas gift.
District Attorney Brad Smith said the charges against the elder Gray could set a significant legal precedent for parental accountability in their children's actions.
In a timeline presented an agent with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation it became apparent that Colt Gray carried out the shooting with chilling precision and forethought, as noted by the items he brought to school that day and his movements captured on surveillance footage.
Evidence presented in court indicated that, prior to the massacre, his notebook outlined a harrowing plan of the number of people he anticipated injuring and killing.
"There are a total of 25 victims," Smith said in a statement, adding that every student and staff member present during the tragedy was affected.
GBI agents also provided an account in court, revealing Colt Gray's disturbing admiration for past school shooters, including an alleged "shrine" to the Parkland shooting gunman in his room.
Colin Gray, aware of his son's obsession, went so far as to receive and fulfil a request for a larger magazine for the firearm, as testified by Barrow County sheriff’s Investigator Jason Smith.
GBI agents also detailed troubling communication within the Gray family, including a text message Colin Gray received from his ex-wife and daughter, which prompted him to check for the now missing AR-15-style rifle he had gifted his son.
The father and son are seeking separate trials. Their arraignment is scheduled for Nov. 21.
