Residents of a house in northeastern Athens-Clarke County this week were alerted to an early morning fire by a smoke alarm and they safety evacuated.

The three women living in the two-story residence on O’Conner Boulevard heard the alarm sounding at about 3 a.m. and rushed to safety outside when temperatures were in the mid-20s

Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the roof of the dwelling, and upon entry they located the seat of the fire in an attic void space. They extinguished the fire and conducted a search.

The house was extensively damaged by smoke, water and firefighting activities.

Red Cross volunteers responded with offers to assist the displaced residents with temporary housing, but the women reportedly made living arrangements with friends living in the area.

The residents told of seeing smoke and flames coming through a vent, leading officials to surmise the fire was related to the heat and air-conditioning system.
