Four people are reported dead and many more injured at a high school in Barrow County where at least one gunman went on a shooting rampage Wednesday morning.
A school system employee who downloaded video surveillance footage of the incident for law enforcement told Classic City News that there appeared to be two shooters, both students.
Multiple news organizations have reported that four people are confirmed dead and there were as many as 30 injured victims.
A source told CCN that two of the deceased victims are faculty members.
The Barrow County Sheriff’s Office released the following statement:
“Authorities are currently on the scene of a school shooting at Apalachee High School, located at 940 Haymon Morris Road.
At approximately 10:23 a.m., officers from multiple law enforcement agencies and Fire/EMS personnel were dispatched to the high school in reference to a reported active shooting. At the time of this release, one suspect is in custody. Casualties have been reported, however details on the number or their conditions is not available at this time.
This is an ongoing situation. Updates will be released when available.”
Federal and state agencies are assisting with the investigation.
Gov. Brian Kemp issued this statement:
“I have directed all available state resources to respond to the incident at Apalachee High School and urge all Georgians to join my family in praying for the safety of those in our classrooms, both in Barrow County and across the state. We will continue to work with local, state, and federal partners as we gather information and further respond to this situation.”
In a statement, the FBI’s Atlanta office said: “FBI Atlanta is aware of the current situation at Apalachee High School in Barrow County. Our agents are on scene coordinating with and supporting local law enforcement.”
Calls and messages to the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office and the school were not immediately returned.
Apalachee High School has about 1,900 students and became Barrow County’s second largest public high school when it opened in 2000.
