Grand jury indicts Athens woman for allegedly strangling grandchild

Brenda Ann Johnson

By Joe Johnson

A Clarke County grand jury has indicted an Athens woman who was arrested last year for allegedly strangling her granddaughter.

Brenda Ann Johnson, 62, was charged with aggravated assault, first-degree cruelty to children, and family violence battery, according to the indictment that was filed in Superior Court on October 4.

Police and court records show that Johnson was arrested on January 2, 2023 at the North Peter Street residence where she lived with the victim.

During a dispute of an unspecified nature, she allegedly used both hands to push down on the young victim’s neck. According to police the child “felt like she was about to die.”

That day apparently wasn’t the only time that the girl had been physically abused, a police report indicates, as she had injuries to her face, wrist, elbow and back that were “in various stages of the healing process.”

After Johnson was arrested the child was removed from the home by the Department of Family and Children Services and placed with different relatives.

Johnson was released from custody over two months later when she made bail.

She is scheduled to be arraigned on the indictment on November 5.
