High fire danger in Athens-Clarke County prompts urgent warning from officials

Fire officials are urging residents to exercise extreme caution as high fire danger conditions persist due to low relative humidity and strong winds.

The Athens-Clarke County Fire Department has responded to and extinguished several grass and brush fires in recent days, highlighting the ongoing risk. One such incident saw Engine 25 dispatched to a grass fire near Barnett Shoals Road and Idylwood Drive.

Authorities are reminding residents to adhere to ACC’s open burning prohibition to prevent additional fires. The combination of dry conditions and gusty winds can cause even small sparks to spread rapidly, endangering lives and property.

Fire officials advise residents to avoid outdoor burning, properly dispose of cigarettes, and refrain from using equipment that may produce sparks. Anyone who notices smoke or fire should report it immediately to emergency services.
