Homicide victim found in Oglethorpe County near Athens border

The Oglethorpe County Sheriff’s Office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are investigating the death of a man found in western Oglethorpe County near the Athens-Clarke County line.

The victim, identified through medical and dental records, was confirmed as 69-year-old David J. Stewart of Double Bridges Road. Authorities have determined his death to be a homicide.

A person of interest has been detained in another state as the investigation continues.

Investigators are seeking information from anyone who recently had contact with Stewart or noticed anything unusual at his residence.
