Athens police identify victim in fatal weekend crash

Athens-Clarke County police on Monday identified the victim in a fatal weekend traffic accident as an 81-year-old Oglethorpe County resident.

According to police, Joe Louis Mattox of Myer Farm Road in Arnoldsville was driving a 1983 Buick Regal at about 10:45 a.m. when he pulled out of Harve Mathis Road to cross U.S. Highway 29 and drove into the path of a 2011 Jeep Liberty that was travelling northbound on Highway 29.

The Jeep crashed into the driver’s side door, police said.

Mattox died at the scene and his passenger, a 77-year-old woman with an address on Berlin Street in Athens, had to be extricated from the vehicle and was transported to the hospital with non-like-threatening injuries, police said.

The driver of the Jeep, a 19-year-old man from Canon, sustained a minor injury, and his passenger, a 19-year-old Royston woman suffered a possible broken hand, police said.

Police spokesman Geof Gilland said the Traffic Unit on Monday continued to investigate the collision.
