A South Carolina man who had been in the area on business was assaulted early Tuesday morning after he stopped at westside Athens hotel to spend the night before driving back home, an Athens-Clarke County police official said.

The incident occurred at Hampton Inn on West Broad Street, according to Lt. Shaun Barnett, ACCPD's public information officer.

"The male victim was in Gainesville for business and stopped at this location to spend the night before going to his home state of South Carolina," Barnett said "The victim stated that as he entered his room, a male and female entered the room behind him.

"The female proceeded to try to grab the victim’s wallet," Barnett said.

"As the victim and the female fought over the wallet, the male pulled out gun," according to the officer. The victim believes that he was stuck in the head with the firearm. The male and female then ran from the room. They did not get the victim’s wallet."
