The following has been released by the Morton Theatre Corporation:

Renowned theatre artist Mike Wiley will portray famed baseball player Jackie Robinson as the Morton Theatre Corporation (MTC) presents “Jackie Robinson: A Game Apart” at 10 a.m. and noon on Feb. 10 and 11 at the historic Morton Theatre. The four shows are part of MTC’s partnership with the Clarke County School District to bring district 8th graders to the theatre for an exclusive yearly performance. This year, however, MTC is opening the performances to the public.

While the past two years saw Wiley perform “Brown v. Board of Education: Over Fifty Years Later,” for CCSD students, this year MTC received a block booking grant from Fox Gives and the Georgia Presenters for “A Game Apart.” The play looks into Robinson’s life following his integration of Major League Baseball. a time of separate and unequal locker rooms, whites-only hotels, and restaurants where “colored” athletes had to enter through the back door. Audiences will also meet Robinson’s compatriots who fought similar battles in athletics.

“We are excited to open this opportunity to the public to see a stunning performer on the Morton stage once again,” said Kimberly Davis, vice president of the Morton Theatre Corporation’s board of directors. “Mike Wiley embodies real people and brings their stories to life in meaningful ways.”

About Jackie

Born in Cairo, Georgia, in 1919, Robinson became the first African American to play Major League Baseball in the modern era–joining the Brooklyn Dodgers at first base on April 15, 1947. He played for 10 years and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962, his first year of eligibility. There will be a talk-back with Wiley at the conclusion of each performance.

Tickets for "Jackie Robinson: A Game Apart" are $5/student for groups of 10 or more (chaperones get in free!) and $10 general admission. Run-time is 50 minutes and the play is recommended for grades 3 and up. The Morton Theatre is also able to accommodate bus parking.
