A man from Savannah was arrested after he was caught red-handed stealing from an SUV that was parked in downtown Athens.
On the evening of March 15, a man and his wife from Madison County were returning from a date night to their Ford Expedition parked on North Jackson Street when they saw 36-year-old Aldin Sterling next to the vehicle’s open door, holding a book bag and other bags.
The man shouted for Sterling to drop the items, at which time the thief ran away towards Washington Street, leaving behind the bags that held belongings valued at over $500, including a laptop, jewelry, and a wallet with cash and credit card.
Based on the victims’ description of the suspect and surveillance video footage, police officers were able to locate Sterling and arrest him on charges of entering a vehicle with intent to commit theft and loitering/prowling.
He is detained at the county jail in lieu of a $4,000 bond.
