An Athens man is facing felony charges after he abandoned a pair of dogs in his apartment while he was out of state for over a month.

One of the animals reportedly died in the owner’s absence.

Police said that on Monday they conducted a welfare check on Highland Park Drive after a neighbor reported a foul odor was coming from the apartment of a man who hadn’t been seen in over a month.

Looking through a window officers saw trash strewn around inside the apartment and a dog thst was jumping up at the window.

The officers also smelled the foul odor and so they forced entry into the residence where they discovered a second dog, which was deceased.

County Animal Services took possession of the surviving dog and the deceased one was taken for a necropsy at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine.

The absent tenant and owner of the dogs was identified by police as 30-year-old Solideen Sadaat Rann, who was subsequently located in New York.
