Man shoots slow-moving car in Athens road rage incident

By Joe Johnson

A man shot into a car Tuesday evening because he was angry that its driver was not going fast enough for him.

No one was injured, though a year-old infant was in the car.

The incident happened shortly before 8:30 pm at the traffic light at Spring Valley and Winterville roads, where the suspect’s car pulled alongside the victim’s and an argument ensued about the speed at which the 22-year-old Athens woman had been driving her 2022 Chevrolet Malibu.

A passenger got out and fired one round into the driver’s side door of the Malibu, at which time the victim sped off, fearing for her life, and pulled into Hallmark Estates and called 911.

The woman described the other car as a blue Hyundai sedan and the gunman as a thin black male who wore eyeglasses.

Police said they recovered a spent cartridge casing at the intersection.
