A 14-year-old student was recently sent home from school after he was found under the influence of THC from gummies that he had consumed.
The Hilsman Middle School 8th grader was so intoxicated that he was unable to stay awake, according to a report by the Athens-Clarke County Police Department.
He told school officials that he had taken just one gummy, but when they searched the locker of a girl who had supplied him, they found two empty packages of Torch Nitroblend XXL gummies, which have high THC content.
“Warning: high dosage,” is printed on the packaging, “Each gummy packs an exhilarating 350 mg punch.” Keep away from children and pets, the warning says.
Experts say that children rarely take just one gummy because they look and taste like candy.
A police officer who met with the boy in the nurse’s office observed that “he was out of it and kept falling asleep,” and “he could barely talk.”
When the boy’s grandmother went to the school to bring him home the nurse advised her to take him to the hospital if symptoms worsened.
There have been news reports nationally of children going to the hospital, and sometimes admitted, for a variety of symptoms from having consumed gummies. They include vomiting, elevated heart rate, tremors, anxiety, dizziness, confusion, and loss of consciousness.
The police department did not file a juvenile complaint or notify the state Department of Juvenile Justice due to a lack of evidence.
School administrators “will give the students involved in this incident consequences for their actions,” the police report reads.
The incident happened on September 30, but the police report wasn’t made public until Wednesday.
