“Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters: An African Tale” coming to Morton Theatre

The Morton Theatre Corporation (MTC) will present an exclusive student performance of a musical adaptation of “Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters: An African Tale” at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 1, at the historic Morton Theatre in downtown Athens. The performance by Atlanta-based Synchronicity Theatre is part of their family series. The musical adaptation is by Karen Abbott.

Published in 1987, the Zimbabwean folktale reimagined by award-winning artist and writer John Steptoe tells the story of two sisters, Manyara and Nyasha. The daughters of Mufaro have starkly different personalities–Manyara is vain and cruel, while Nyasha is selfless and loving. When they learn that the king is looking for a wife, they set out on a journey to meet him to prove themselves worthy of the throne. Through a series of tests, the daughters’ true natures are revealed. The story highlights themes of kindness, generosity, honesty and love.

"We are thrilled to invite students and their chaperones to this exclusive performance," said Niké Shimobi-Obijuru, chair of MTC’s programming committee. "Synchronicity has created a compelling musical adaptation of this timeless piece of literature.”

Tickets for "Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters" are $5/student for groups of 10 or more (chaperones get in free!) and $10 general admission. The Morton also is able to accommodate bus parking. You can purchase your tickets at mortontheatre.com or by calling the box office at 706-613-3771. Don't miss this incredible performance!
