Motorist arrested for Snapchatting while intoxicated after Athens traffic accident

By Joe Johnson

A man was recently arrested after an Athens traffic accident in which his pickup truck rear-ended a car while he was intoxicated and distracted by Snapchatting on his cellphone.

Cody Scott Guyton, 21, of Gainesville, admitted to police that prior to driving early the morning of Aug. 24 he had consumed 16-ounce beers at the Georgia Theatre while attending a Knox concert.

He drove his Ford F-250 into the back of a car that had stopped for a pedestrian in the crosswalk at Prince and Grady avenues, police said, and then drove away despite having caused significant damage to the other vehicle.

The car’s driver called 911 while following the pickup for nearly half a mile until it pulled into a private driveway and stopped.

The responding officer arrested Guyton after the motorist failed roadside sobriety tests, and then took him to the hospital where blood was drawn for laboratory testing of its alcohol content, according to police.

Guyton admitted that at the time of the collision he’d been on his phone Snapchatting, police said, but claimed that he was unable to avoid hitting the other vehicle because his truck “didn’t have very good brakes.”

Guyton was booked into jail on charges of DUI, following another vehicle too closely, and driving while distracted. He was released upon posting bail.
