Police crisis intervention teams to be discussed at Coffee With a Cop event

The bi-monthly meeting of Coffee with Cops, a relationship building program of Athens Classic, Inc., is scheduled for 2 p.m. July 19 at Weaver D’s, 1016 E. Broad St.

Program speakers will be Athens-Clarke County police Detective Robie Cochran and Katie McFarland, a licensed clinical social worker and criminal justice liaison.

Cochran and McFarland began the Athens-Clarke County Police Crisis Intervention Unit in 2017. They are the senior of two teams dispatched by Athens/Clarke County 911 when a call appears to involve someone who may be considered mentally ill or severely impaired.

The upcoming fiscal year budget includes funding for two more such teams.

The Athens-Clarke County Police Department has more of these teams trained and in the field than any police department in Georgia.

Here is some data from the teams calls and operations in 2017 to help understand the role which they play in Community Policing and public safety.

Coffee with Cops is free, open to the public and made possible by our host restaurant/location and private donations to Athens Classic, Inc.
