The Athens-Clarke County Police Department is investigating the recent shooting of a man at his apartment complex on the west side of town.
Darren Jamal Nelson, 32, was shot multiple times the afternoon of September 15 at University Oaks, 2360 W. Broad Street, according to police.
Officers responded at about 5:19 p.m. after police received multiple 911 calls concerning 5-6 gunshots being fired near the 400 Building, with a victim on the ground and screaming for help.
Nelson told officers that he didn’t know who had shot him, police said, and he was “in pain and rolling back and forth, not providing much information on what occurred.”
He was transported to the hospital by ambulance.
Witnesses told police that they heard a man and woman arguing immediately before the shooting, and then saw a black SUV leaving the scene.
