Nearly everyone in Athens-Clarke County has encountered some kind of drainage issue on their property. Whether it’s standing water, a soggy lawn, or waterlogged gardens or flower beds, drainage issues don’t just cause problems on private property - they can be harmful for the environment. These issues often lead to polluted stormwater runoff entering our waterways, further impacting local water quality and ecosystems.
Fortunately, in addition to more complex projects like installing a rain garden or replacing impervious surfaces, there are several simple steps we can take in our yards that not only improve drainage issues but also contribute to the greater health of our local ecosystem. Actions like mulching flower beds, planting keystone tree species, and using native plants can make a significant impact over time, both in our yards and beyond. These small but powerful actions inspired the creation of our new Rainscaping for Resilience program.
Managing or resolving drainage issues through Rainscaping ultimately reduces the volume of stormwater entering waterways, thereby minimizing the damage caused by flooding and erosion. This program also aims to improve the quality of water entering our waterways by encouraging residents to reduce fertilizer use, pick up litter, and clear storm drains of trash and debris. Adopting Rainscaping practices, such as planting water-smart native plants, also increases biodiversity by creating habitats that support local wildlife and enhance ecological health. And if that’s not enough to convince you, Rainscaping can also beautify your property, adding both value and aesthetic appeal!
Through this program, participants will engage with educational materials before signing a pledge to implement at least one of our Rainscaping practices. Pledges include Rain Harvesting Hero, Native Habitat Advocate, and the Green Lawn Commitment. Participants can also receive a yard sign to proudly display their commitment to Rainscaping and inspire their friends and neighbors to join the program too!
