The Athens-Clarke County Fire and Emergency Services Department posted the following on its Facebook page Saturday night:
This morning at 10:23 our fire crews were dispatched to a reported house fire on Old Jefferson Road. Upon arrival they were met with heavy flames and smoke extending from the front of the home. Through swift actions and coordinated efforts, our firefighters were able to quickly bring the fire under control. Thankfully, the residents were able to escape the structure in time, but sadly their pets did not survive.

Our hearts and thoughts are with the residents for their devastating loss. We urge everyone to ensure they have working smoke alarms and a safety exit plan for their home.
