Residents flee Athens house fire

The following was released this evening by the Athens-Clarke County Fire and Emergency Services Department:

B-shift crews were dispatched to a possible structure fire at a two-story multifamily residence on Highland Park Drive at 2:40 am on January 16th. Engine 25 arrived first and found light smoke emanating from the eaves and a small fire on the first floor next to the fireplace. When crews went to check the second floor, however, they encountered heavy smoke and fire banking down the stairs. Firefighters then pulled multiple hoselines and sent in several crews to put a stop to the fire, which by then had spread into the attic and both floors.

Thankfully, our firefighters were able to quickly adapt to the rapidly changing situation and put a stop to the fire.

We’re grateful that all occupants made it safely out of the residence.

Fires today spread much faster than they used to. If you haven’t already, the start of the new year is a good time for you and your loved ones to come up with a fire escape plan and a designated meeting spot outside of your home.
