Science fact of the day: The “Bloop” was caused by an iceberg

Writer's picture: Classic City NewsClassic City News

In 1997, researchers recorded a mysterious underwater sound that came to be known as “the bloop.”

In 2005, they finally identified its source — the unique sound was caused by an “icequake” — an iceberg cracking and breaking away from an Antarctic glacier. Icequakes — and, presumably,  accompanying “bloops” — are becoming more common due to global warming.
