Some of our best employees (we were selective in interviews) were on probation for non violent crimes. And yes, there were a few minor issues.

We had an understanding. They show up on time, do good work and be respectful or we would make sure the probation office (officer) knew that they did not. That said, we drug tested before employment (right after the interviews if we offered the job) and turned about 50% of the applicants down due a strong interview process. We also had several walk away from the offer saying they would not drug test immediately.

Give the ones that want to take responsibility and move on with life a second chance.
