The Allstate Sugar Bowl has been postponed in the wake of a suspected terrorist attack in New Orleans early Wednesday morning.
Fifteen people were killed and over 30 were injured, including a University of Georgia student who is said to be in critical condition.
Two police officers were wounded during a shootout with the suspected terrorist.
The Sugar Bowl game between the UGA and Notre Dame football teams had been scheduled to kickoff tonight at in the Caesars Super-dome.
Authorities said the contest has been postponed for one day due to uncertainty about whether a threat to public safety continues to exist.
Sugar Bowl CEO Jeff Hundley issued the following statement:
“The Sugar Bowl Committee is devastated by the terrible events from early this morning. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. We are in ongoing discussions with authorities on the local, state, and federal levels and will communicate further details as they become available.”
Thousands of fans from both universities have been in New Orleans for days in preparation for the game, which is one of four quarterfinal contests in the College Football Playoffs.
Both teams are staying in hotels just blocks from the incident, which occurred near the intersection of Bourbon Street and Canal Street in the city’s historic French Quarter.
