UGA student reports being raped by Lyft driver

By Joe Johnson

A 21-year-old University of Georgia student reported Thursday that she had been raped by a Lyft driver.

The Athens-Clarke County Police Department was notified of the alleged incident through the UGA Health Center, where a sexual assault examination was conducted.

According to police, the student reported the following:

After being taken home in a Lyft she remained in the car for about an hour while talking with the driver.

They decided to go to a bar downtown, where she had one drink and one shot. After leaving the bar they went to Waffle House on Oconee Street, where they remained in the parking lot for a couple of hours.

“She just remembers snapshots of him” being on top of her and penetrated her without consent,” police said. “She doesn’t remember how she got home, she just woke up in her bed in her pajamas and her shirt had blood on them.”

The student provided police with the name and Gainesville address for the 34-year-old Lyft driver, as well as his vehicle information.

Anyone who has been sexually assaulted or knows someone who has can contact The Cottage Sexual Assault Center and Children's Advocacy Center.
