Video released of active shooter at Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office

Gwinnett County Sheriff Keybo Taylor today released the following information concerning an active shooter incident last month at the county jail:

(Gwinnett County, Ga., November 4, 2024) – On October 7, 2024, at approximately 3:00 p.m., deputies from the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office encountered a suspect, later identified as Emmanuel Patrick Bearden, along with his young daughter at our headquarters. The suspect appeared agitated and demonstrated unusual behavior, prompting deputies to investigate further. Deputies observed that the suspect was wearing body armor. Deputies maintained visual contact of the suspect as he exited the front X-ray station of the headquarters building.

As the suspect returned to his vehicle, he placed his daughter in the backseat and then began to retrieve weapons from inside the vehicle. Deputies made several verbal commands to the suspect before he began firing at them. Deputies returned fire, striking the suspect. Medical aid was rendered, and the suspect was transported to the hospital. The suspect’s daughter was unharmed and returned to relatives following the incident. During the incident, additional deputies were present at the scene to ensure the safety of civilians in the vicinity. The quick and decisive actions of our deputies prevented potential harm to any bystanders.

In the weeks following this incident, Sheriff Keybo Taylor, and Command Staff representatives from the GCSO consulted with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) and the Gwinnett County District Attorney's Office to publicly release the body camera footage. The released video has been edited to include markers that highlight key moments of the incident, with blurring applied to protect the integrity of this ongoing investigation.
