Winder Mayor Terrell announces “A Light in the Dark” Apalachee memorial event

From The City of Winder:

Mayor Jimmy Terrell addresses the community with a message of support, gratitude, and sympathy after the events that occurred Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2024.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic events that occurred...our thoughts and prayers are with the families affected, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to those who have lost a loved one,” said Terrell.

Collaborating during this tragic time, Mayor Terrell offers that the City of Winder Police Department and the City of Winder are committed to supporting the Barrow County Sheriff’s Department and Barrow County Board of Education as needed.

“We are working tirelessly to ensure that the community remains safe during this difficult time,” shares Terrell.

In addition to the community vigil hosted last night at Jug Tavern Park, Winder's Thank Goodness Its First Friday event scheduled for tomorrow night will be renamed.

TGIFF: A Light in The Dark is now the moniker for Friday Night's event and will include a short memorial ceremony and additional resources made available for those in attendance.

TGIFF: A Light in the Dark

  • Event Time: 6-9 PM

  • Memorial Ceremony: At 6:30 PM, we will hold a ceremony in the back pavilion of Jug Tavern Park, including a few words from Mayor Terrell, a moment of silence, candle-lighting (one for each victim), and a wreath display in memory of those we’ve lost.

  • Counseling Support: The Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD) will have counselors on-site to provide support for anyone in need throughout the evening.

  • Blue Ribbon Pins: In a show of solidarity and remembrance, we will be distributing blue ribbon pins to attendees as a symbol of hope and unity.

  • Memorial Display: The memorial will remain on display at the pavilion after the event has concluded for those who wish to visit and pay their respects later in the evening or the following days.

  • Additional Activities: While the event will include the planned Bark in the Park activities such as live music, food trucks, and dog shows, the atmosphere will remain one of reflection and support for the community.
