By Joe Johnson

An Athens woman has been given a total 20-year sentence for fatally stabbing a man last year.

Sandy Elaine Williams pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter for killing 46-year-old Erwin Bennett on April 9, 2023 by stabbing him in the chest in home in the Nellie B community of East Athens.

She entered the plea Tuesday in Clarke County Superior Court as part of a negotiated agreement with prosecutors, who in return dismissed a charge of murder.

In accordance with the plea bargain, Judge Eric Norris sentenced 60-year-old Williams to seven years in prison and 13 years on probation.

Court records show that Williams had a history of verbal and physical altercations with people with whom she shared households in different Athens locations.

Along with convictions on misdemeanor charges in State Court she had been ordered to obtain alcohol abuse and anger counseling.
